San Diego County Apartment Association Joins National Apartment Association
Jan. 18, 2011—The National Apartment Association (NAA) Board of Directors approved a charter for the San Diego County Apartment Association (SDCAA) to affiliate with NAA.
"Welcoming the San Diego County Apartment Association as members of NAA has grown our membership to 16,500 members throughout California," said Doug Culkin, President of NAA. "Given the economic climate our members and their residents are facing, there has never been a more important time to work together. This partnership will provide additional support to SDCAA's California-based efforts and give its members access to NAA's national resources, which enhance the value of membership to an independent rental owner, property management professional or large multifamily owner."
SDCAA became NAA's fourth affiliate in California. The other affiliates are the Apartment Association of Greater Los Angeles, the Apartment Association of Orange County and the Apartment Association, California Southern Cities.
"We are thrilled to return to NAA and excited about all the enhanced services and programs we now can provide to our 2,200 members, including NAA's online courses and attending the largest apartment industry event, the NAA Education Conference and Exposition, which this year is in Las Vegas," said SDCAA President Karen Murphy Gross. "But immediately, SDCAA will start work as part of the NAA grassroots effort to repeal the new federal 1099 tax laws and will send a group to Washington, D.C., to lobby Congress."
The federal government recently instituted onerous tax law changes that will require apartment owners to file 1099-MISC forms for many new vendors. The IRS will impose stiff penalties for failure to file the form. NAA is actively seeking more California housing providers to help repeal the new 1099 provisions by explaining the problem to their Congress members. All NAA affiliates will travel to Washington, D.C., March 12-16, for the Capitol Conference and to lobby Congress.
The SDCAA will join NAA's federation of state and local affiliates who already look to NAA's educational, training, event and advocacy offerings as critical professional development and networking resources.
The NAA Education Institute (NAAEI) will soon unveil dozens of online courses and seminars available 24/7/365 through a new customized learning management system (LMS), which significantly reduces the cost of educating employees and increases accessibility for members who cannot attend in-person training. NAAEI provides broad-based training and career development programs for current and future industry professionals, and NAAEI's designations are nationally recognized mark of excellence in the industry.
NAA's annual Education Conference & Exposition held June 23-25, 2011, at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, will bring together more than 5,000 multifamily housing professionals for three days of the best professional development training in the industry. In 2011, conference attendees will have the opportunity to learn from more than 40 breakout education programs and attend keynote sessions by former Secretary of State and National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice and best-selling author Daniel Pink.
