CINCINNATI, OH - Alston Park, a family affordable housing renovation in Cincinnati’s Avondale neighborhood, has received LEED Gold certification from the US Green Building Council. Sol design + consulting provided energy efficiency consultation and green building certification services for the project, developed by The Woda Group.
The City of Cincinnati, Alston Park also received the Ohio Conference of Community Development President’s Award for Innovative Practices. The annual award recognizes development projects that meet significant needs with immediate and sustainable impact in the community, and can be replicated elsewhere with similar success.
The Alston Park renovation replaced 65 abandoned and deteriorating units with 39 green apartment homes for lower-income families. The formerly blighted site now features family outdoor recreation space, a tot lot and pleasant landscaped surroundings.
The renovated apartments offer energy efficiency comparable to new construction and many sustainable features that qualify Alston Park for LEED Gold status:
- Low flow plumbing fixtures
- High efficiency lighting
- Zero VOC paint
- Green Label Plus carpet
- Drought-tolerant plantings
- Recycled drywall
- Reclamation of existing major building systems and components
- Diversion of 67% of construction waste from landfills
Alston Park is also situated to give residents easy access to public transit providing over 245 rides per weekday, a significant green benefit.
