HOUSTON, TX - Mercedes Sanchez has recently joined the Houston Apartment Association (HAA) as a public affairs specialist to work with local elected officials, in particular with the office of the mayor, city council, and key City of Houston departments, to monitor and contribute to the latest legislative initiatives that affect the apartment industry on behalf of the HAA members. Sanchez also coordinates HAA’s Better Government Fund meetings and supports the organization’s Political Action Committee’s fundraisers and events.
Sanchez brings extensive public affairs experience to her new position. Previously, she worked for Mayor Pro-tem and Council Member Ed Gonzalez, serving as community liaison and later as the agenda director. Prior to that, Sanchez was selected for the competitive public policy fellowship, City Hall Fellows, working for the City of Houston’s Anti-Gang Office.
Sanchez attended Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in economics. She also received a Public Policy and International Affairs Fellowship from the Carnegie Mellon University. Sanchez is fluent in Spanish and in 2013 she was selected to the prestigious Emerging Leaders Class by the Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
