Historic Abandoned School Building Comes to Life as Brand New Apartment Community in Baltimore

BALTIMORE, MD - At their Grand Opening on July 23 , 2014, the 122 year old Columbus School reopens as a Brand New Apartment Community!  After undergoing a 16 month renovation, the Columbus School Apartments celebrates bringing new homes, new life and a new purpose to an abandoned school.

This much anticipated Grand Opening was celebrated with a ribbon cutting ceremony attended by Baltimore City’s Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, Secretary Raymond Skinnner, members of the media, residents and other area notables.   Columbus School Apartments, originally a 122 year old abandoned school that was doomed to a life of boarded up windows and empty hallways, has now been redeveloped into 50 affordable one and two bedroom apartment homes.  Located on the intersection of North Avenue and Washington Street, the community now features modern homes where there once was only abandoned classrooms.

“In every partnership that we engage in, we like to see our core values align. Columbus school did just that.” said Janine Lind, Executive Vice President of Edgewood Management. “Our partners at The Woda Group have developed a new community by renovating a historic preservation building and maintaining many of the original features.  By creating these new homes and instilling life in a building that once served families and children in this Baltimore City community, they have ensured that it will do so again, for many years to come.”

The apartment community is already 62% leased and have residents who have already moved into their homes. Some of the communities’ amenities include 12-foot ceilings, large picturesque windows, ceramic tiled flooring as well as gate operated parking access.
