Design of AERO Apartments Waterfront Community Echoes Historic Airstation Past While Delivering Next-Gen Living in Alameda

ALAMEDA CA - Cypress Equity Investments unveiled today their newest residential community, AERO Apartments, the first, for-lease residential community in the burgeoning Alameda Point Waterfront District, announced Michael Sorochinsky, the firm’s Founder and CEO. Removal of the site’s construction fencing reveals distinctive architecture for the 200-residence community reminiscent of the historic hangars and industrial buildings of the former naval airbase.

AERO Apartments was designed by local architecture firm, PYATOK architecture + urban planning, as the gateway to the burgeoning Alameda Point Waterfront District. Occupying an entire block in the heart of the district, AERO Apartments features retail and residential along its perimeter, activating the streetscape. Spacious, landscaped property setbacks combined with broad sidewalks and deep awnings further enhance the pedestrian experience. Residents and visitors access the community via a gated outdoor paseo that leads to the ample first floor amenities and a quiet landscaped courtyard within.

According to Kevin Markarian, AIA, Principal, "AERO draws upon the signature forms and materials of the historic Alameda Naval Air Station and features a dramatic 60-foot-tall butterfly roof to act as a landmark at its most prominent corner.” Markarian went on to add, “The building’s massing and recesses were designed to echo the rhythms of the well-patinaed naval hangars, which have become home to retailers, manufacturers, marine science facilities, fitness centers, and a growing list of craft distilleries, wineries, and breweries, earning the area the moniker of ‘Spirits Alley.’ AERO Apartments’ finishes include corrugated siding as an ode to the historic structures; metal sunscreens to enhance the industrial character while providing natural cooling to the apartments; and bold maritime colors to harmonize with the waterfront backdrop.”

Bringing the exterior industrial and aeronautic motifs into the residential amenity spaces, Parisa O’Connell Interior Design delivers amenity spaces that are strong and bold, yet light, elegant, and welcoming. “Our overall design philosophy began with an art nouveau style to introduce dynamism and movement into the vast amenity spaces and then we gave them a more mid-century feel to be genuine to the architecture and harken back to the chic heyday of air travel,” noted Parisa O’Connell. Dropped ceilings of natural wood taper at the walls, reminiscent of an airline fuselage with overhead bins. Seating nooks, conversation clusters, and long banquettes create the ambiance of an elegant sky club where you want to sit, relax and be social.

Each room features an entire wall adorned with a subtle palette gradient representative of a dawn/dusk horizon during flight. All furniture and lighting fixtures are composed of geometric shapes and sharp angles that create movement within their forms. Custom rugs with swooping lines contrast with polished concrete floors and represent flight patterns across the sky. A long, shared hallway connecting the amenity spaces features a curtain of glass showcasing the landscaped interior courtyard, and together with repeated signature pendant lighting along the ceiling creates a dynamic concourse with runway lighting to tie it all together.

Located at 2000 Ardent Way, AERO Apartments offers 200 pet-friendly apartments across studio, 1-bed, and 2-bedroom configurations, and features high design interiors on par with the finest in San Francisco. Constructed to the highest of sustainability standards, AERO Apartments is registered for LEED Gold certification.
