GALVESTON, TX - How fast are north county cities growing? Fast enough to push multifamily housing developers into new frontiers, or in this case, unincorporated parts of the county. Such developments were once rare but now inevitable as cities run out of land, officials say. For starters, a developer has begun construction on a senior housing project on a 4.28-acre plot at the intersection of FM 1266 and Deats Road, which is near Dickinson but in unincorporated territory.
The facility will include nine units and a recreation center. The name of the developer was not immediately available. The permit applicant name "Community Retirement Center/Engineer Instructors Inc." isn't very enlightening.
Meanwhile, the county three weeks ago issued permits for the construction of an 18-unit apartment complex on 28.57 acres at 1225 Lawrence Road. That's in an unincorporated area between League City, Clear Lake Shores and Kemah. The county issued the permit to Galveston Summerbrooke Apartments LLC, which also isn't very telling about the developer. Some work already has been done at the site, which is the last undeveloped tract north of Jarboe Bayou.
It's highly unusual for the county to receive permit requests for multi-housing developments, officials say. But with the fast growth of some cities, development in unincorporated areas likely will increase. "Clear Lake, Kemah and South Shore Harbour are bursting at the seams," County Engineer Mike Fitzgerald said. "The little unincorporated pockets are starting to fill in."
