Low-Income Housing Opens In Southernside
GREENVILLE, SC - A 42-unit apartment complex in Greenville's Southernside neighborhood was officially opened Tuesday for low-income residents. The $5 million Mulberry Court Apartments feature one-, two- and three-bedroom homes for families earning less than 60 percent of the median area income, or about $33,000 a year, according to Mercy Housing, a not-for-profit company based in Colorado.

The project was built through a combination of federal low-income tax credit grants, donations and traditional financing, company officials said. The Hollingsworth Funds Inc. gave $70,000, said spokeswoman Paula Gwynn Grant.

Bon Secours St. Francis Health System provided planning for the project and will be offering health services for the residents, including its mobile dental unit.

"For many Americans, having safe, affordable housing is only a dream," St. Francis CEO Valinda Rutledge said in a statement. "Through our work with Mercy Housing, this is no longer a dream but a new reality for these families in Greenville."
