NATIONAL NEWS - The American Institute of Architects has named 19 recipients of the 2008 Housing Awards. Honoring design excellence, the annual awards program is a nod to firms that take into account the "importance of good housing as a necessity of life, a sanctuary for the human spirit and a valuable national resource," according to organizers. Projects were honored in four categories: One/Two Family Custom Housing, Multifamily Housing, One/Two Family Production Housing, and Special Housing.
Among the winning projects are a weekend retreat in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, designed by Lake Flato Architects with a metal roof to resist damage from wildfires; a residence in Snowmass Colorado by Voorsanger Architects with a moss rock that runs the entire length of the house, dividing living areas; the budget-friendly Crabapple modular home in Omaha, Nebraska by Randy Brown Architects, designed with a front porch and a green roof; a sustainable prefab house by Salmela Architect that comes in a kit; and the Macallen Building Condominiums in Boston by Burt Hill, expected to land LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
The jury was composed of jury chair Sanford Steinberg, Steinberg Design Collaborative; David Jameson, David Jameson, Architect; Jane Kolleeny, Architectural Record; Charles F. McAfee, McAfee3 Architects; and Mark McInturff, McInturff Architects.
