NEWTOWN SQUARE, PA - Balfour Beatty Communities, LLC, a leading provider of property management, development and related real estate services for the multifamily, military, and student housing markets, has successfully completed the Initial Development Period for new and renovated family housing at Fort Jackson in Columbia, South Carolina.
The scope of the privatized family housing project included the demolition of more than 900 older housing units, construction of more than 600 new homes, and renovation of an additional 32 homes at the U.S. Army installation.
The total construction value on the project amounted to $150M, with approximately 70% of that cost funneling back into the local community through the use of area subcontractors and local procurement of building supplies and other materials. The initial development period for military housing at Fort Jackson opened in October of 2008 and, working with partner Balfour Beatty Construction, was successfully completed ahead of schedule.
As part of the comprehensive family housing project, several community amenities were also constructed, including a 42,000 square foot community center, a handicap accessible playground, and numerous athletic facilities from tennis, volleyball and basketball courts to all-purpose fields.
Sustainability and energy efficiency were a priority throughout the development, with initiatives ranging from the recycling and re-use of materials during demolition and renovations, to energy-efficient home design and materials.
“We are very proud of the work our teams have performed at Fort Jackson and the significantly enhanced housing options and community amenities now available to the Soldiers and their families stationed there,” said Mark Lavin, senior vice president of Balfour Beatty Communities. “We look forward to many more years of delivering the highest quality living experience for all of our residents at the installation.”
Though initial community development is now complete, Balfour Beatty Communities will continue to deliver renovation work and special projects at Fort Jackson in the coming years. Balfour Beatty Communities also provides comprehensive property management and maintenance services for all of the installation’s family housing.
