House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is a big fan of holidays. Months ago, she vowed Congress would deliver an energy bill by the Fourth of July -- a deadline that came and went. Then, in early November, she expressed optimism that energy legislation -- to boost fuel economy standards, among other things -- would pass before the Thanksgiving recess.
"I would like to do it before we leave. I'd like to do it because it's Thanksgiving -- over and under and through the woods to grandmother's house we go; that's what I used to do and now they come to grandmother's house," she said, meaning she is now the family matriarch.
And when it became clear that holiday deadline also would pass, she looked into December and predicted energy legislation "will be a wonderful Christmas present to the American people."
If Congress misses that target, what's next? An energy bill in our Easter basket?
