WASHINGTON, DC - Rebuilding Together Alexandria, one of 200 affiliates of the national organization, Rebuilding Together, is presenting the keys of a newly renovated home to first-time homeowners. Alexandria was able to renovate and rehabilitate this home due to a grant they received through the Neighborhood Stabilization Program, as created by the federal government. This example is one of several in which Rebuilding Together affiliates have acquired, or are pursuing NSP funding to preserve affordable homeownership and revitalize communities that have been affected by the foreclosure crisis.
The "Handing over the Keys" ceremony will occur amongst the presence of local and state dignitaries, as well as the local community and volunteers. William D. Euille, Mayor of the City of Alexandria; Danny Abramson, Board President, Alexandria Housing Corporation; and John E. Hall, Field Office Director, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, are some of the expected dignitaries and speakers at this event.
A collaborative effort between Rebuilding Together, the City of Alexandria, and the Alexandria Housing Development Corporation has made it possible for a young hardworking family to become first time homeowners.
This NSP project is only one of Rebuilding Together's affiliates to be working with government-allocated funds to help low-income families buy a home and maintain value in the marketplace. Other affiliates of Rebuilding Together have recently acquired NSP funding and dozens are currently positioning themselves to receive NSP funding to preserve homeownership in their local communities.
The first-time homeowners, Saroj and Radhika Chhetri and their young son, have been searching for a home for months and only through this collaboration between agencies and Rebuilding Together has it become possible.
The Alexandria home's rehabilitation roster includes: replaced kitchen countertops and cabinets, new flooring, new lighting, energy-efficient appliances, weatherization and insulation upgrades, and new interior painting. Countless volunteers from the area have been giving their time to help renovate the home for the past month. The new energy-efficient appliances are projected to cut about 40% of consumption costs in the home.
Rebuilding Together's core mission and values are closely tied to the purpose of the Neighborhood Stabilization Program. Both are committed to preserving affordable homeownership. And in this case are teaming up to make homes an affordable, safe and practical option for low-income families, which in turn, revitalizes the economic health of the entire community.
Rebuilding Together is the nation's leading nonprofit organization working to preserve affordable homeownership and revitalize neighborhoods by providing critical home repair and modification services to those in need at no cost to homeowners. In addition to its core home repair work, Rebuilding Together also rehabilitates community centers and conducts home modification and repair programs that focus on aging in place. Rebuilding Together has programs dedicated to ageing in place, energy efficiency, veteran's housing, and disaster recovery and reconstruction.
