Green Housing for Homeless Opens

Green Housing for Homeless Opens
DEVVER, CO - The Colorado Coalition for the Homeless Tuesday officially opened its first "green" affordable housing project in Denver.

The four-story Renaissance Riverfront Lofts at 3440 Park Avenue West in downtown Denver's River North district includes 100 one- and two-bedroom apartments, designed and built to incorporate sustainability features such as water conservation, energy efficiency and environmentally friendly building materials.

The project includes rooftop solar-power panels, Energy Star-rated appliances and compact-fluorescent lighting.

Renaissance Riverfront Lofts is located on a 1.46-acre former asphalt production site on the South Platte River, near the Railyards Marketplace retail center.

Forty percent of the units are set aside for formerly homeless people being served by the CCH. The rest of the units are leased to low-income households.

The complex features a community room with TVs, couches and recreational features.

Groundbreaking for the project was in January 2008.

"This development will help meet a critical housing need in Denver for both homeless individuals and persons working downtown who cannot afford to live in the nearby luxury loft developments," CCH President John Parvensky said in a statement.

The project was developed by Renaissance Housing Development Corp., a CCH subsidiary. Christopher Carvell Architects of Denver designed the project. FCI Constructors Inc. was the contractor.
