Lofts To Be Built In Historic School House

New Story
KNOXVILLE -- The historic Brownlow Elementary school building is finally being renovated to make room for 35 Loft apartments just minutes from Downtown Knoxville. Brownlow Lofts has already gone through its demolition stage and construction will begin once the building's units are auctioned off October 30th at the Foundry at World's Fair Park.

As it stands, the smallest unit is a studio and the largest unit is a four-bedroom, four-and-a-half bath luxury loft, but buyers will be able to combine any of the units.

Five units will be built in the old gymnasium, and because of the high-vaulted ceilings, they might just be the most sought after.

Most of the units will feature hardwood floors, solid wood cabinets, and stainless steel appliances.

The units are divided into four categories of pricing: the lowest starts at about $70,000 and the highest will be about $170,000.

6 News had a chance to speak with a neighbor who says she thinks there are mixed opinions about the new lofts, but she is excited.

"It has kind of been an eyesore up to this point. Windows are getting broken out... And I think it's a beautiful building," said Vicki Hatfield. "I'm glad someone has come in and is doing something with it. I think it'll add value to the neighborhood."

Construction is expected to wrap up by next December.
