Seniors Get Rare Opportunity for Housing
MIAMI, FL - Applicants Already in Line Camping Out - 1,000 Expected. Elderly Housing Development and Operations Corporation (EHDOC) is announcing that applications will be distributed for a new low-income senior development in Miami, Palermo Lakes on October 21, 2008. EHDOC expects a huge line because of the scarcity of affordable housing for seniors.

"It is wonderful to see this building being completed, but it is also sad to note that we will not be able to offer housing to all who need it," stated EHDOC Executive Director Steve Protulis. EHDOC currently has four other senior communities in Miami, and the combined waiting list for those properties alone exceeds 4000. "It is obvious that these 109 units will not put a dent in the housing needs for Miami seniors," commented Protulis.

Plans are underway for a "Support Senior Housing Rally" to be held on October 21, 2008 at the Palermo Lakes site. "We are bringing together leaders from the community, from state and federal government so that we can emphasize this 'silent crisis' and make sure that housing for seniors gets the attention it deserves," stated Protulis.

Interested seniors can pick up an application at the property located at 5311 NW 7th Street, Miami, FL. Applicants must be 62 years of age and meet the HUD income guidelines. This new 109 unit building is expected to be completed in December of this year.

Morton Bahr, President of the EHDOC Board of Directors and former President of the Communication Workers of America (CWA), stated, "Today we already have people lining up and camping out waiting to be able to get an application for this development. We have to change our priorities. We can't keep cutting valuable programs like Section 202 Housing when so many seniors lack affordable housing."
