TYLER, TX - Tyler is in line to receive more than $1.4 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. According to the office of Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, HUD provides these grants on an annual basis to help develop viable communities. The grants go to communities to provide suitable housing and living environments for low-income families.
"I am pleased that HUD is taking action to encourage investment in these communities," Sen. Hutchison said. "These grants will help provide quality public housing and spur economic development in these areas."
Tyler Mayor Barbara Bass said the city budgets for these funds each year to pay for several Neighborhood Services Department programs. "We're always pleased with the allocation we receive from the federal government," Ms. Bass said. "It helps fund some very important programs." Tyler will receive money from two HUD grants: the Community Development Block Grant and the HOME Grant. According to the HUD Web site,
HOME is the largest Federal block grant to state and local governments designed exclusively to create affordable housing for low-income households. The Community Development Block Grant is a flexible program that provides communities with resources to address a wide range of community development needs. Tyler will receive roughly $935,000 from the CDB Grant and $468,000 from the HOME Grant.
