Capstone Development Partners to Develop New Student Housing High-Rise in Downtown Seattle

SEATTLE, WA - Capstone Development Partners (CDP) and Cornish College of the Arts (Cornish) are working together to bring new student housing, classrooms and administrative offices to the Cornish campus in downtown Seattle. “We are so pleased to partner with CDP on this project,” said Cornish President Nancy J. Uscher. “This new building will be the heart of our South Lake Union campus and the Cornish ‘living room’ for all of our students, not just the residents.”

The new student housing is being designed by Ankrom Moisan Architects and constructed by Howard S. Wright Construction both of Portland, OR. The building will be a mixed-used, high-rise structure at 20 stories. The project will include approximately 200 suite and studio style student units with more than 400 beds of housing. The first and second floors of the building will be home to Cornish administrative offices, studio movement classrooms and a campus “student living room”. The top floor of the building will contain resident amenity space including a fitness center, media room, community kitchen, gaming area, lounge space, laundry and music practice rooms as well as a sky deck with views of downtown and nearby Lake Union. The project site is located at the corner of Terry and Lenora Avenues on the college’s campus.

The management of the project will be a creative collaboration between CDP, Cornish and Capstone On-Campus Management (COCM) in a shared governance approach. Through this approach, COCM will handle asset management and Cornish will retain responsibility for student programs and residential life.

The new housing will begin construction in February 2014 and is scheduled for delivery in July 2015. “We are honored to partner with Cornish College to bring this landmark addition to the campus and this exciting neighborhood experiencing tremendous redevelopment,” said Bruce McKee, CDP Principal. “This project will set a new standard for Cornish facilities and will transform the educational experience for all Cornish students.”

The project will allow Cornish to relocate its current housing to a convenient and permanent “on-campus” location and to begin to accommodate steady enrollment growth that Cornish has been experiencing. Initially, Cornish will be partnering with City University, located several blocks away, and will be providing approximately 100 beds of housing for City University students within the facility.
