Water Conservation

Protecting Resources
Water is a precious resource in our environment. Growing populations and ongoing droughts are squeezing our water resources dry, causing natural habitat degradation and impacting our everyday use of water. We have no choice but to pay more attention to how we are using water, and how we may be wasting it.
You’re In Control
Install New Fixtures
Dripping faucets can waste 20 gallons of water a day. A leaking toilet can use 90,000 gallons of water in a month. Get out the wrench and change the washers on sinks and showers, or get new waterless faucets. Install new fixtures like low-volume or dual flush toilets, low-flow showerheads , water-efficient appliances. Also, aerators on faucets can significantly reduce water volume.
Cultivate Good Water Habits
The average household consumes multiple thousands of gallons each month. Turn off the water while you are not actually using it. When brushing teeth, use a glass of water instead of a running tap for wetting the brush and rinsing. A running tap can waste about 16 litres of water each minute. Take a shower instead of a bath and limit your showers to the time it takes to wash and rinse all of you.
Harvest Rainwater
Rainwater is an excellent source of water for gardening, bathing, cooking and drinking. Unlike conventional water drawn from underground aquifers, rainwater is always salt- and mineral-free, and its low hardness level eliminates any need for a water softener. Rain cisterns come in all shapes and sizes ranging from larger underground systems to smaller, freestanding ones.
Harvest Greywater
Greywater can be recycled with practical plumbing systems like the Aqus, or with simple practices such as emptying the fish tank in the garden instead of the sink.
Keep Your Eyes Open
Report broken pipes, open hydrants, and excessive waste. Don’t be shy about pointing out leaks to your friends and family members, either. Water sources have to be protected.
Don’t Spike The Punch
In many closed loop systems like those in cities around the Great Lakes, waste water is returned to the Lake that fresh water comes out of. Don’t pour chemicals or other contaminates down drains.
