CINCINNATI, OH - Chimes Terrace Apartments, a newly renovated property in the village of Johnstown, Ohio, has received a LEED Gold rating from the US Green Building Council. Sol design + consulting, Cincinnati, provided energy consulting and green building certification services for the 60-unit project. Chimes Terrace is developed and operated by National Church Residences, designed by Berardi + Partners and built by Ruscilli Construction.
Chimes Terrace Apartments offers 36 one-bedroom independent living apartments and 24 units of assisted living for persons 62 and older and mobility impaired persons. The property is conveniently located near supermarkets, banks, pharmacies, restaurants, retail, services and houses of worship, and within a short walk to transit stops and a park. Access to community resources and public transportation are recognized green building attributes, especially for older adults who may no longer drive.
Energy performance for the project is excellent, thanks to very efficient split system PTAC heating and cooling equipment in each unit, and the use of innovative concrete structural insulated panels (SIPs) for wall and slab floor construction, yielding enhanced R-values.

- CFL and LED lighting
- 100% drought-tolerant landscaping
- Low water use plumbing fixtures
- Allergen-reducing MERV 8 air filters and Green Label Plus carpet contribute to healthy indoor air quality, which is particularly valuable for older residents
- Reuse of the existing building foundation, wall and roof framing
Residents of the controlled-access building have a National Church Residences on-premises coordinator to arrange a variety of services, activities and special transportation.
