East Palo Alto Boxing Club's After-School Program Gets A Big Boost from Equity Residential

EAST PALO ALTO, CA - Continuing their efforts to support and enhance programs for children and youth in East Palo Alto, Equity Residential is donating $25,000 in fitness equipment, computers and cash to the non-profit East Palo Alto Boxing Club, allowing the organization with the means to expand its after school program into additional space adjoining the gym, announced John Hyjer, First Vice President of Equity Residential.

According to Hyjer, “The EPA Boxing Club works with both the bodies and minds of children and youth in the area, providing a safe place to come after school to study and exercise.  Boxing is a sport requiring a high-degree of discipline, and we have found both this organization, its leadership, and the sport itself to be compelling to youth in the area.”

Equity Residential has made contributing to sporting activities for youth and children in East Palo Alto a priority.  The company announced last year that they established a fund to supplement private club fees for soccer, football and other organized sports, to allow children and youth who are residents within their Woodland Park Apartment Community to participate in what may otherwise be out of their reach financially.  Equity has also hosted Sports Ball Giveaways for Woodland Park residents, donating more than 300 football, soccer balls, volleyballs and baseballs to young, aspiring athletes.

Located at 2528 Pulgas Ave. in East Palo Alto, CA., the East Palo Alto Boxing Club was established in 2003 to provide the discipline and structure disadvantaged youth require to succeed in life.  Founder and Coach John Gray is a three-time Golden Glove Middleweight Champion, and has been a resident of East Palo Alto for 30 years.
