NEWTOWN SQUARE, PA - Balfour Beatty Communities, LLC, a leading provider of property management, development and related real estate services for the multifamily, military, and student housing markets, has successfully completed the Initial Development Period for military family housing for the Navy Southeast Region, a significant development project that brought new and renovated housing to 11 Navy installations including Joint Base Charleston (SC), NAS Jacksonville (FL), NAS JRB Fort Worth (TX), NAS Key West (FL), NAS Meridian (MS), NAS Pensacola (FL), NAS Whiting Field (FL), NCBC Gulfport (MS), NSA Panama City (FL), NSB Kings Bay (GA), NS Mayport (FL). Across the comprehensive project, Balfour Beatty demolished more than 2,600 aging homes and replaced them with more than 1,100 newly constructed homes as well as renovating an additional 650 homes.
Through its partnership with the U.S. Navy, Balfour Beatty commenced construction activities on the $400M Navy Southeast project in November 2007 and maintained a strong focus on local development resources, eventually funneling more than 50% of the total construction cost back into local communities through the use of local subcontractors and local procurement of building supplies and other materials. In addition to the new and renovated housing, a variety of community amenities were constructed during the project’s Initial Development Period, including numerous playgrounds, community centers, splash parks and pools.
New housing developed for the project was designed with many environmentally-friendly features. The homes and community centers were constructed using various sustainable products including Energy Star® appliances, low-flow plumbing fixtures, high-efficiency HVAC systems and other energy efficient materials.
